BearClan Resources
Hello! All of the important information about BearClan's traditions, ceremonies, and other lore-based processes can be found here! All of this information is current under Thornstar's leadership; once a new cat becomes leader, the information on this page may change.
THORNSTAR HAS NINE LIVES REMAINING
Thornstar is the fourth canonical leader of BearClan, and the first since the site's inception.
Thornstar has an open den policy. However, if you trouble him with trivial matters, he will probably discipline you.
Ceremonies
Please see the corresponding spoiler for information on how to qualify and apply for ceremonies in BearClan!
Joining as an outsider is currently open. All outsiders are required to speak to Thornstar before joining. He will give your cat an assessment before allowing them to join, assuming they are six moons or older. If they are younger than six moons, he will generally accept them outright.
The assessment will be held by three warriors. Occasionally, a high rank may take the place of one of the warriors. It will consist of three parts: a hunting assessment, a battle evaluation, and a strength, agility, and stamina test. If your cat passes all three parts sufficiently, they will be allowed to join as a warrior. Otherwise, Thornstar will allow them to join as an apprentice. A cat who refuses to be assessed or who fails each part horrendously may be rejected, depending on their reason and age.
If you wish to have your cat join as an outsider, fill this form out:

Please wait for me to accept your form before posting. Once your form has been accepted, you may have your cat wander into BearClan territory. Once they are found and brought to Thornstar, their evaluation will begin.
Under Thornstar, BearClan observes two traditions. One, the death ceremony, has been a tradition of BearClan's since their inception. The other is a new tradition introduced by Thornstar.
Death Ceremony
The death ceremony takes place after a cat of BearClan dies. To qualify for this ceremony, your cat must have existed as an active BearClan member for at least one month. In addition, they must have made at least ten roleplay posts.
The ceremony will begin with the medicine cat or medicine apprentice lying the body in the center of the camp. The body will be surrounded by flowers to mask the scent of death. Strengthening herbs will be placed between the front paws of the deceased; it is believed these herbs will help them on their journey to The Beyond.
Those closest to the deceased will then form a circle around the deceased. They will make an offer to SpiritClan by placing an object of their choice on the body. If the correct offerings are made, it is believed the spirit's journey to The Beyond will be an effortless and painless one. If the deceased has no close friends or family to partake in this part of the ceremony, the high ranks will take their place.
The deceased's Clanmates will be allowed to grieve their fallen until just before dawn. At this time, the medicine cat or medicine apprentice will smear the blood of either a whip-poor-will or a loon, depending on the season. Loons are only present in Clan territory in newleaf and greenleaf. These birds are believed to be the animals responsible for guiding spirits to The Beyond in the absence of a loved one. By smearing the blood of one of these birds on the deceased, the Clan calls on these birds to ensure this spirit is not lost on their journey.
Once this is complete, the elders of the Clan will bury the deceased. If there are not enough elders to bury the dead, the apprentices will assist. The deceased will be buried with their strengthening herbs and their offerings.
Warrior Welcome
Thornstar's new tradition, the Warrior Welcome, is held for new warriors of BearClan. Every warrior must participate in this tradition as soon as they receive their warrior name.
Upon the conclusion of their warrior ceremony, a warrior will be invited to the leader's cold den. Here, the leader will present them with the blood of a fish, the preferred food of BearClan's namesake animal. The new warrior will dip their right paw in the blood and press it against a spot on the stone walls of the den. The new pawprint will be allowed to dry.
When a kit becomes an apprentice, the leader will often invite them to see the pawprints as part of their training.
For the second part of the Warrior Welcome, the new warrior will travel down the main Caverns tunnel. Once they have gone deep enough for it to be completely dark, they will stop and sit. They will remain here in silent vigil until a warrior comes to retrieve them, one half-day later. In OOC/IRL time, this will be six hours.
If a warrior refuses to participate in this tradition, Thornstar will strip them of their warrior name and exile them.

Ceremonies
Please see the corresponding spoiler for information on how to qualify and apply for ceremonies in BearClan!
- Apprentice:
To qualify for an apprentice ceremony, a kit must:
1. Be at least six moons old.
2. Have at least 25 posts.
3. Be in good standing with the Clan.
Once your kit qualifies, fill this form out and post it here:

Please note that Thornstar will have the final say in who mentors each apprentice. A cat may request to mentor a specific kit, but Thornstar will not guarantee that he will follow through with that pairing. He will take it into serious consideration, though.
Once you've filled the form out and it's been approved, Thornstar will make your kit an apprentice at the next Clan meeting.
- Warrior:
In order to become a warrior, an apprentice must satisfy the following requirements:
1. They must have completed every aspect of their training. An apprentice must, at minimum, complete:
- A territory tour.
- Two hunting lessons.
- Three battle training lessons.
- Two patrols of any kind.
- A dangerous herb lesson with either the medicine cat or medicine apprentice.
These training sessions should ideally be completed with their mentor, but don't have to be.
2. Attended and participated in at least one Gathering. To qualify as an active participant, an apprentice must make at least two posts. At least one of those posts should be of them interacting with cats from the other Clans.
3. Attended and participated in at least two Clan meetings. To qualify as an active participant, an apprentice must participate in ceremonies as relevant (i.e. chanting new names) and should have at least one other post reacting to the meeting.
4. Completed a final warrior assessment. This assessment is generally held by the mentor, a high rank, and a warrior. All previous requirements must be met before an apprentice can take their final assessment.
5. Have at least 100 roleplay posts. These posts may include training, Gathering, and Clan meeting posts.
Once all of these requirements have been completed, please fill this form out:

Age:

Once your form has been approved, Thornstar will make your apprentice a warrior at the next Clan meeting. If your apprentice has not met the requirements to be a warrior by 18 moons, Thornstar will review their suitability for Clan life.
- Elder:
To become an elder, a cat must meet the following requirements:
1. At least 300 roleplay posts.
2. The cat must be 72 moons or older.
Cats who are severely disabled may be required to join the elders' den by Thornstar. Cats who are sufficiently disabled may request to join the elders, but their ability to will be at Thornstar's discretion.
If you wish for your cat to join the elders, fill this form out:

If your form is approved, Thornstar will make your cat an elder at the next Clan meeting.
- High Ranks:
If a kit or cat wishes to become a medicine apprentice, they should have a conversation with the medicine cat about their suitability for the role. It is at the medicine cat's discretion whether they accept the kit or not.
If the medicine cat accepts your kit or cat as their apprentice, they will inform Thornstar of their decision. He will then hold the appropriate ceremony at the next Clan meeting.
In the event BearClan is left without a medicine cat or medicine apprentice, Thornstar will consult SpiritClan at the Starpool for answers. The cat they choose will become the new medicine cat; Thornstar will hold a ceremony upon his return.
If you ask Thornstar to be deputy, he'll probably restrict you to the apprentices' den for a moon. If Thornstar needs to choose a deputy, he will do so without being asked.
